this ain't no boy scout's slip knot!

when i was younger and first wore a tie, it was a nice clip-on.  it wasn't until later that i actually learned to tie a necktie.  i can't remember if my mom or my dad tied my first tie.  of course they had to do it for me because i had no clue what i was doing.

when i had to occasionally wear a tie i was able to do it for myself, but it never turned out well.  what i know now, i was tying a single windsor knot.  it was always lopsided and it just never looked right.  since it was rare that i wore i tie, i never cared or thought too much about it.

over the past year, i've worn a tie for work on a regular basis.  because there were hundreds of people looking at my tie, i couldn't have a lopsided, messed-up knot around my neck.  i asked one of my friends to assist me in creating a decent looking knot.  so each day i carefully removed my tie, loosening it enough just to slip it over my head.  i kept this knot for months.  that is, until i saw a passenger on the plane.

i was flying with my friend tucker and we spotted an attractive guy who had the perfect knot.  i half-kidding said to tucker that we should ask him to tie our ties for us.  he thought it was a brilliant idea and so later in the flight, he asked the passenger to come up front for a moment.  taken aback, the young guy finally approached the front galley.  tucker explained to him that we liked his tie and the way that it was tied.  we asked him if he would tie ours in the same manner.  at first he was just going to show us how to do it, but we finally explained that we wanted him to do it for us!  kyle, as we learned his name, took our ties and began to create the perfect 'full windsor' knots.  he told us this might be the most bizarre request ever and that his friends wouldn't believe the story.  before he left us, he gave us his business card, explained that he worked for a rental car company in canada and if we were ever in the area and needed a car, to call him.  okay!  score!  a discounted car rental AND a great looking tie knot!

well, recently my tie started to look sad and even had a small spot on it.  i ordered a new uniform tie and was forced to learn how to create the full windsor knot myself.  after replaying an online video countless times, i finally was able to recreate what kyle did for me months prior!

and i present to you....adam's full windsor knot!    (shown above)
