reading in 2010: book #5

the help by kathryn stockett

the help is a book about african american maids working in white households in the early 1960s. the book is set in jackson, mississippi. the story is told by three different characters. skeeter is a young, white woman who recently graduated from college and returned home to alabama and found her friend, her maid, gone from her house. abileen and minny are two african american maids who struggle in various ways in their personal lives. together, with other maids, the three women write a book telling the stories of "the help" of jackson, mississippi.

this story is a shocking look at what life was like for many americans, just 50 short years ago. it's a look at how far we've come and how far we still have to go for equality for all.

this was kathryn stockett's first novel. it was announced that it will be made into a movie. i look forward to seeing the characters in the novel come to life on the big screen.

book completed: march 2, 2010.

current read: are you there vodka? it's me chelsea
