reading in 2011: book #4

as you can see, i was busy reading during the month of march while posting each day for my picture challenge.  i had hoped/planned to read all nonfiction works, mainly biographies and memoirs for all of 2011, but after finishing my previous book (dirty sexy politics, by meghan mccain which i will post about tomorrow) i needed another book and grabbed one from the bookshelf that i had yet to read.  that led me to a wonderful book!

sarah's key
by tatiana de rosnay

the book takes place in paris both during world war ii and the modern day. the story of sarah is woven into julia's life as she prepares to move into a new home with her husband and daughter. sarah is a young jewish girl who is forced from her home by french police under nazi orders. her experience is like many other jewish citizens in europe at the time of hilter's reign. julia is an american ex-pat journalist who has lived a majority of her life in paris. her most recent assignment is to write a story for the 60th anniversary of the vel d'hiv roundup. learning the horrible treatment of these citizens, julia comes across the name of a small girl named sarah. she becomes intrigued by sarah's story and researches the young girl's journey after the roundup through family members, public records, etc.

the most shocking part of the book is how sarah's life comes to affect julia and ultimately change her life forever.

i cannot say enough excellent things about this book. it is an emotional read, one you will not put down until you are finished.

and i just discovered that they're making this book into a movie, to come out this summer!  should be excellent!
