reading in 2011: book #6

after finishing my previous book, i was at a loss with my to-read list and asked for recommendations.  my friend jenny recommended reading the hunger games.  i had not heard of the book so i did a little research to see just what it was about.  after learning the author got her idea for the book from seeing a reality tv program next to coverage of the iraq war, i was intrigued.  a little bit of 'big brother' with some futuristic elements led me to eventually purchasing the book.

wow.  i honestly could not put the book down.  i plowed through the book in a matter of days.  i only hoped that the book would maintain my interest from the beginning to the end.  it undoubtedly did.  another reason i was inclined to read this book is because it is the first in a trilogy.  now i have my next two books already picked out.

i do not want to give too much of the book away, so i will just give you the short synopsis that comes from the link above.
it is the first book of the hunger games trology.  it introduces sixteen-year-old katniss everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of panem where north america once stood.  this is where a powerful government working in a central city called the capitol holds power.  in the book, the hunger games are an annual televised event where the capitol chooses one boy and one girl from each district to fight to the death.  the hunger games exist to demonstrate not even the children are beyond the reach of the capitol's power.
i'm sure i'll soon be posting about the second book, chasing fire.
