this past weekend we went to sarasota to visit our friend tracy. tracy escaped the chicago cold last year in favor of her old florida hometown. we had tried to visit her in february, but since everyone else earned for the warmth of florida over the snow drifts of chicago, we were unable to get on a flight to go visit. thankfully we were able to get a seat to sarasota on our new friends at airtran.we walked off the plane and were greeted by the sun and humidity florida is so well-known for. tracy gave us a quick driving tour of the sarasota area on our way to her place. (did you know that the ringlings are from sarasota?! they have a museum and school of art named after them there!) a short while later we made our way to a tracy's friend's house for a fish boil. we're talking a down-home seafood boil! there were mussels, shrimp, potatoes, corn, and sausage with some giant crabs thrown on the table. with bibs on and mallets in hand we got to work on our seafood feast! it was some work, but a lot of fun! and check out the cake for the birthday boy! amazing!
the next day we met tracy's mom and stepdad for lunch and a local eatery (with no advertising for the restaurant, it's appropriately named "word of mouth"). we later walked around st. armands circle, a cute shopping area, and then enjoyed a few drinks along the water. when the rain came, we decided to head back to tracy's place and rest for a couple hours before we went out for the evening. for dinner, we met up with tracy's dad and stepmom and enjoyed some fantastic wine and delicious indian food at chutney's. it was a small place and the owner of the place stopped to talk with us often. after dinner we went to a local bar where they had flemenco dancing and an amazing rooftop area.
it was a great trip and i look forward to visiting again soon! it's easy to get beach-envy!
